Introducing a New Series of Virtual Events

A way to come together for support, education and fun in the time of coronavirus

By Lesley Jane Seymour

If you are like me, you are glued to the news, which is confusing and constantly changing. I’m trying hard to understand what I should do, and what I shouldn’t, but every day that target changes. All the uncertainty makes it hard to understand how we should each move forward — with our lives, our jobs, our families. It makes it difficult to focus on our work and I find myself longing to feel the strong sense of community that I know TheCovey can offer.

Since many of us are now forced to work from home or stay at home, forgo entertainment and events, I thought I’d use the powers of this great group to create some anxiety relief, some distraction, some opportunities to continue learning about issues that will matter to us once this moment has passed. I have asked some members of the community to step up — and they have — lovingly.

Please join me in any of these or all of these virtual events (you will tune in over the Zoom network — which is really easy, I promise). I’d also love to hear from you about what other virtual services or learning opportunities you would like us to provide that would help you get through this tough time. And if you have an expertise to offer this group, please let me know as well. We are such an amazingly educated and talented group, that I know there is even more vital programming Covey can provide.

Fireside Chat with Lesley Jane Seymour

I want you all to bring your fears, your concerns, your issues and let’s just talk them out. I am not a coach or a shrink–and that is not what the FC is about. It’s just us, sharing. Imagine us sitting around a firepit together at sunset sharing our thoughts and concerns. Imagine learning that you are not alone with your anxieties right now: that we are all feeling the same way. And by just sharing those thoughts, we can get to know each other better, bring all of our expertise to play, and help each other get through this difficult time. This event is open and FREE to everyone.

How to Relaunch Your Career. A conversation with Ginny Brzezinski
Ginny co-wrote  “Comeback Careers: Rethink, Refresh, Reinvent Your Success–at 40,50, and Beyond” with her sister-in-law Mika Brzezinski, and it is just a fabulous guide to getting back into the corporate world after an absence or after a pivot. What I love so much about it is that they not only did original research and cited the other studies out there, but they give you the missing scripts: what do you exactly say about that gap to the guy (!) interviewing you. We’ll discuss age discrimination in the workplace, why it’s real, and how to deal. I’ll start the questioning but you get to ask her the questions you have on your mind.

Moving Away From Fear — A Guided Meditation
Most of you know I’ve been meditating now for many years. It calms me down, gives me focus, relaxes me, helps me set an intention for the day, and make sure I’m not letting my life slide by. If you’ve been thinking of starting a meditation practice (and there’s no time like now), this is a great way to start: in the privacy of your home. You can dial in and watch — or just listen to — my new friend Kelly Rovetto walk us through this way to relax the mind and let go (I’ll be there doing it with you). Kelly, who has been in the medical sales industry for over 15 years, learned about meditation while in personal recovery, and has been practicing and writing guided mindfulness meditations for 8 years. You may think joining a virtual meditation would feel strange or weird, but I tried it and it’s actually fabulous. No one can see you, but you’ll be able to see Kelly and me — right from my living room in NOLA.

A Candid Conversation About Aging with Joan Lunden
The former host of Good Morning America has reinvented herself many times since she left the show 20 years ago and prospered way beyond her wildest dreams. Next week I’ll be interviewing Lunden about her newest book, “Why Did I Come Into This Room: A Candid Conversation About Aging” and ask Lunden about how to rebound after being forced to reinvent yourself and how to thrive in the afterlife.
