Reinventing after Losing Yourself in Motherhood

FROM A CONVERSATION WITH NICOLE JENNINGS ON THE REINVENT YOURSELF PODCAST

The Covey

Nicole Jennings via Twitter

“I used to be outgoing, confident, loving fashion,” says Nicole Jennings, wife of famous football player Gregg Jennings, who after having her fourth child, discovered that she’d immersed herself so deeply in motherhood that “I found myself lost in that world.”  Clothes in her closet ran from size 4 to 14 and her identity felt equally amorphous. Jennings talks with CoveyClub founder Lesley Jane Seymour about how she found her way back to her true self by pulling in a trainer and a grief counselor (her beloved great grandmother had died) and eventually opened one of Minneapolis’s coolest stores, Queen Anna House of Fashion,  and a fabulous online site One Posh Closet.

Nicole’s Top Tips for Reinvention

  1. Look around and find your tribe.
Vulnerability is a big deal for women. We don’t necessarily want to go out and talk to everyone. So find that one person that you know will give you the truth, and give them what it is that’s going on. Get it out in the open because you don’t have to deal with it by yourself.
  2. Get it in a Journal or Visualize it.
When it’s out there on paper you can decipher it, and see the things that don’t matter at all versus the things that matters the most. It helps you take a bigger thing and break it down into what’s doable.
  3. Just do it.
Don’t think about it, or try to rationalize it. Don’t say, okay I’ll do it on Monday. Why not just do it now? If you give yourself more than 4 seconds, your brain is wired to talk you out of it.
